The Smallcombe Cemetery Inscriptions

During the early 1880s an additional burial site for the increased population in Bathwick was being sought. The Duke of Cleveland released the land at the southern end of Sydney Buildings for the St Mary the Virgin Churchyard.

Thomas Fuller was employed as the architect with George Mann as the builder. The corner stone of the Mortuary Chapel was laid on May 9 1855 and the consecrated ground opened for burials in 1856. The adjacent burial ground, known as Smallcombe Vale Cemetery, opened in 1862.

The Smallcombe Vale Chapel was designed by Alfred Goodridge. In 1907 the original St Mary the Virgin Churchyard was extended by a further six sections.

The Bath Corporation assumed responsibility for both cemeteries in 1947. In the 1970s the caretakers lodge was sold for £800 without water or drainage.

In 1988 both cemeteries were declared full, and officially closed. The Mortuary Chapel was sold by auction in 2007.

There are approximately 3,000 plots spread over 16 sections: A to K, with I not being allocated, in the St Mary the Virgin cemetery and 5 sections, V to Z, in Smallcombe Vale. Sections V, W and Z being the nonconformist plots in Smallcombe Vale, divided from the adjacent sections by a line of stones.

With the help of research carried out by the Bathwick History Society we are locating and photographing the headstones for former residents. The names we have are matched from the pdf files [found from the BUILDINGS page], although it may be a relative, and in some cases a trusted servant, buried there. The plot grid reference is shown below after the name. These plot numbers are in line with the survey carried out and completed in 2011 by Dr Philip Bendall, and now available at the Bath Records Office.

The link at the end of each section opens the inscription page for that Section. Maps, reproduced from the original grid plans, can be found from there.

[Current maps produced by Dr Bendall can be viewed at the Bath Records Office].

A standard format for the memorial text has been adopted here using lower case, with all names in capitals. Spelling and punctuation is as on the memorial. The photographs were taken when the inscriptions were read and are copyright to the Sydney Buildings History Group.
